Nazarenes

A group of early-19th-century German painters who shared a commitment to reviving spirituality in art. Members included Johann Friedrich Overbeck (1789-1869), Franz Pforr (1788-1812), and Peter von Cornelius (1783-1867). The primary motivation of the Nazarenes was a reaction against Neoclassicism and the academy system. Hoping to return to an art that embodied spiritual values, the Nazarenes sought inspiration in Late Medieval and Early Renaissance painting. Web resource here.
