(Italian: “Greek manner”). (Also known as the Italo-Byzantine style). A term coined by Giorgio Vasari (1511–74) for 13th-century Italian painting that was influenced by Byzantine styles. The maniera greca is characterized by gilded backgrounds, flattened space, and striations to suggest folds of fabric.
