The mineral graphite is a crystalline form of carbon that occurs naturally. Graphite was used for drawing in Europe as early as the 16th century, and its use became more widespread in the 18th century.  At end of the 18th century the first pencils were made from clay and powdered graphite, based on the invention of Nicolas-Jacques Conté (1755–1805).
