dormer

(French: dormoir, “dormitory”).  A roofed structure that projects vertically from the sloping roof of a building. Dormers usually contain windows, called dormer windows. They are designed to provide additional height and daylight in what would otherwise be dark, low-ceilinged attic spaces. Web resources here and here.
