CoBrA

A group of European expressionist artists active in the late 1940s and early ’50s. CoBrA was founded by Karel Appel, Constant Nieuwenhuys, Corneille, Christian Dotremont, Asger Jorn, and Joseph Noiret in November, 1948 . The name is derived from the initial letters of the cities Copenhagen, Brussels and Amsterdam. CoBrA artists took inspiration from children’s art, “primitive” art, myth and folklore.
