- (Spanish: plateresco, “silversmith-like”). The dominant architectural style in Spain during the late 15th and 16th centuries, also used in Spain’s American colonies. Plateresque architecture is characterized by intricate, jewel-like, relief ornament applied to the surfaces of buildings for decorative effect, without regard for structural articulation. Favorite motifs include fanciful scrolls, arabesques and twisted columns. Pronunciation here.
