A technique for producing patterned cloth by a process of resist-dyeing. The pattern is achieved through selectively binding and dyeing bundles of thread before weaving them into fabric. Ikat originated in Southeast Asia, and it is most closely associated with the textile traditions of Indonesia (where the term ikat originates). However, similar dyeing and weaving techniques developed independently in other regions, including Africa, the Americas, India, and Central Asia. Web resources here and here. Video here.
