Googie

A product of car culture, Googie is a modern vernacular architectural style that originated in Southern California in the 1950s. The style is characterized by a futuristic look, with large, brightly colored signs and dramatic rooflines to grab the attention of people driving by in cars. Googie was popular with roadside businesses, including motels, fast-food restaurants, and drive-in theaters. Pronunciation here. Web resources here and here.
