Caravaggisti

The Caravaggisti were a generation of 17th-century European painters who emulated aspects of the innovative style of Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio (1571–1610). They are known for their naturalism, dramatic lighting (tenebrism), and use of contemporary settings and costumes. The term Caravaggisti refers to both Italian and non-Italian artists influenced by Caravaggio. These include in Italy, Orazio Gentileschi, Artemisia Gentileschi and Bartolomeo Manfredi; in Spain, Francisco Ribalta and Jusepe de Ribera; in Flanders, Gerard Seghers and Jan Janssens; in the Dutch Republic, Hendrick ter Bruggen, Gerrit von Honthorst, and Dirck van Baburen.
