batik

A wax-resist dyeing technique used to make patterned cloth.  The design is first painted on the fabric in wax, so that when the fabric is dyed these parts will not take the dye, but remain the original color. Batik is made in several countries, including Nigeria, China and India, but the batik of Indonesia is the most renowned. Web resource here.
