A deep-blue, semiprecious stone with golden veins, prized since antiquity for its intense color. Lapis lazuli is the stone from which natural ultramarine pigment is ground. Until the 19th century lapis lazuli was obtained only from mines in what is now northeastern Afghanistan. Video here.
